The Project Coordinator also uses SciWheel to conduct thorough literature reviews for the project’s aims. North Carolina is home to approximately 700,000 Veterans making them about 8 percent of the state’s adult population. In 2023, four NC cities were listed as the best places in the US for Veterans to live (Lee, H. 2023), but Veterans live in all 100 counties, 80 of which are considered rural (www.rural.gov). NC is a desirable place to live, yet 60% of the state’s Veterans are not enrolled in VA healthcare. Veterans in NC are at increased risk of poor health outcomes when they lack access to the Social Determinants of Health ( SDOH ) such as housing affordability, economic support, transportation costs and educational expenses (Taheri, et al. 2023). In response to the VA’s request for county-level maps illustrating the SDOH affecting Veterans in North Carolina, this project aims to support the Mid-Atlantic Network Office in the following ways: 1. Offer best-practice implementation guidelines and technical support to coordinate state-wide resource and referral registries for services to Veterans and their families. 2. Provide interactive maps showing distribution of Veterans as well as resources and social supports at county and census tract levels across the state of North Carolina. 3. Generate decision support tools for community partners and facilitate adoption of evidence-based practices to improve local conditions; and 4. Design training, recognition, and designation systems to promote Veteran-healthy activities in community organizations and regional networks.
